Creating an asbestos management plan
Back to latest news

An asbestos management plan is an incredibly useful document for your site maintenance. It sets out all the information you need to safely manage the asbestos containing materials on your site. By following your asbestos plan, you can protect the health of everyone on site and ensure you remain compliant with asbestos law.
What should be in an asbestos management plan?
There are several elements that should feature in your asbestos management plan. These include:
- Who the asbestos dutyholder is
- Your asbestos register (including the site plan, location of AMCs, and areas that haven’t been inspected)
- Monitoring schedule for the condition of AMCs
- How to share asbestos register with employees and contractors
- Measures in place to prevent disturbing AMCs
- Emergency action plan
Your asbestos plan can be written or electronic but must be easy to read and accessible to anyone who requires it.
Using your asbestos plans
You can use your asbestos management plan to help you prioritise actions you need to take to maintain safety on your site. If AMCs are in a good condition and unlikely to be disturbed, it is usually safer to leave them in place with on going management. However, if materials have been damaged, or are located in places due for renovation or demolition, they are much higher risk.
Using your asbestos management plan, you will be able to plan your actions for monitoring, repairing, protecting, sealing or removing asbestos containing materials. It will help inform your short term and long term actions.
These actions need to be clear and have an outlined timescale, as well as having regular reviews.
Keeping your asbestos plans up to date
It’s important that you keep your asbestos management plans up to date so it is always relevant and useful. You should review your plan when:
- Work takes place which affects the AMC
- Staff changes for roles with asbestos responsibilities
- AMCs have been disturbed
- AMCs have had scheduled maintenance reviews
